A comparison of CRM tools – with Salesforce as market leader in SaaS systems, SugarCRM, the successful commercial open source system, and Odoo (formerly OpenERP) as the award-winning shooting star in the Open Source League. The range of CRM systems is overwhelming, and, to a greater or lesser extent, each has its advantages and disadvantages. If you want to install a successful CRM system, you should, of course, base your choice on the quality of the software, but even more importantly on its suitability for your individual requirements.
Salesforce is a very sophisticated system that has been optimized over many years, with an advanced functional range and the greatest scope of installations. In addition to functional safety, its “soft skills” are not to be underestimated: many people working for the market leader have a strong experience in using Salesforce, both nationally and internationally. This an even more attractive feature for large companies with operations in many different countries. However, size can be both a blessing and a curse. Individual adjustments are expensive or nearly impossible, which is why smaller companies or companies with special requirements are likely to turn to more flexible systems. Especially since the market leaders rarely tend to be the cheapest provider.
This may go a long way to explain SugarCRM’s success. As an Open Source tool, it quickly became a welcome alternative for all users unable to come to terms with the rigid features of Salesforce. The Professional Solution helped to smooth the entry into CRM. But anyone expecting functionalities comparable to Salesforce and planning to expand his business with Opportunity Management also has to dig deeper into his pockets for SugarCRM’s Enterprise Edition.
The license-free Open Source Odoo (formerly OpenERP) is the fastest growing system, having reached already over 2 Mio users after only six years. It is younger by far and dazzles with its modern features. As an example, Version 8.0 includes a unique CMS system with integrated Website Builder and the potential to revolutionize the CRM landscape. Odoo definitely does not have to shy away from any comparison with the established systems.
